World Press Freedom Day!

Are you enjoying your yahoo news? Are you having a fantastic time browsing articles here on DFTBA News? Ever think that in some places these things would be beyond illegal? Today is the day to be grateful. Today, May 3rd, is World Press Freedom Day. This day is celebrated by many countries.
Here in the United States, it is easy to take the luxury of daily news for granted. It’s just as easy to get angry when it interrupts are favorite television show with a high pitched squeal and a red bar across the top. But journalists everywhere are celebrating. The right to free press is still being threatened. And journalists are still being imprisoned for spreading the word of knowledge and events. This truly is a day to be grateful.
How did it all get started you ask? Well, I won’t go as far as to begin with the printing press. But, in 1991 The United Nations General Assembly declared this day represent free press and the freedom of expression. So today we celebrate, as both writers and people who support freedom of knowledge, and remember those journalists who lost their lives in the pursuit of these things.

  1. Very important issue. Does more need to be done, not only to defend the press’s freedom but also to enhance it? It is important to have an independent media, capable of criticising government, but in a world where the mass media is largely controlled by a few tycoon moguls, big business should be held to account too. I believe it was Albert Camus said “A free press can be good or bad, but a restricted press can only ever be bad”.
