Girl Up!

Everyone knows what it means to “man up.” It means to take on humility, place our pride in our work, and sometimes do something really stupid because our friends say it will make us look cool. But what does it mean to “girl up”? Girl Up is a growing activist group which encourages young ladies to become world leaders. Their web page says this:

“Girl Up is an innovative campaign of the United Nations Foundation. We give American girls the opportunity to become global leaders and channel their energy and compassion to raise awareness and funds for United Nations programs that help some of the world’s hardest-to-reach adolescent girls.”

This campaign relies on fundraising like any other. It encourages girls to host car washes or garage sales for the cause. The money goes to several different areas to help girls go to school in developing countries.

Not that the efforts of this campaign aren’t important, but on a broader spectrum they are doing a lot more. Groups likes these are encouraging the budding generation of activists. Whether they focus solely on adult women, young girls, teens, child soldiers, or anything else. These stories are moving this next generation to care. Researchers have stated that this generation is by far the most narcissistic. And that is a fair point; with twitter, facebook, and other mediums that depend on one’s belief that other people must care what they have to say. But now it is becoming more evident that while we are more self involved on home turf, we are far more generous when it comes to charity.
