National Suicide Awareness Day

/!\ Trigger Warning /!\

Today in the US is National Suicide Awareness Day.  I made a video about this but it is long and is going to probably take most of the day to upload so I wanted to make a blog post about it too.

In the United States an estimated 30,000 people will commit suicide this year and an estimated 750,000 people will attempt suicide this year.  That is a lot of people that are in need of help and while I am not an expert of any kind on suicide there are many many people who are and I am going to put some contact numbers and websites where one can go for help if needed.

Contact Info

  • 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433)
  • 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255)
  • www.suicide.org (also has local contacts by state HERE)
  • 1-866-488-7386 (Trevor Project)
  • Most College Campuses have aid if you check with your adviser or peer mentor

What little I do know about the topic leads me to encourage people to reach out to somebody they know or somebody they don’t know.  Not just today, but everyday, there are people in your life that just by reaching out and talking to them you can make a difference.  Even if it only opens up the dialog and gets them talking it can help.  So please today take just 5 minutes of your time and say hello to somebody you know or somebody you don’t know because that hello can make a difference.
